چکیده

An increasing number of activities in several disciplinary and industrial fields such as the scientific research, the industrial design and the environmental management, rely on the production and employment of informative resources representing objects, information and knowledge. The vast availability of digitalized information resources (documents, images, maps, videos, 3D model) highlights the need for appropriate methods to effectively share and employ all these resources. In particular, tools to search and select information resources produced by third parties are required to successfully achieve our daily work activities. Headway in this direction is made adopting the metadata, a description of the most relevant features characterizing the information resources. However, a plenty of features have to be considered to fully describe the information resources in sophisticated fields as those mentioned. This brings to a complexity of metadata and to a growing need for tools which face with this complexity. The thesis aims at developing methods to analyze metadata easing the search and comparison of information resources. The goal is to select the resources which best fit the user’s needs in specific activities. In particular, the thesis faces with the problem of metadata complexity and supports in the discovery of selection criteria which are unknown to the user. The metadata analysis consists of two approaches: visual and semantic analysis. The visual analysis involves the user as much as possible to let him discover the most suitable selection criteria. The semantic analysis supports in the browsing and selection of information resources taking into account the user’s knowledge which is properly formalized.

The purpose of this research was to find out the reaction of Web Search Engines to Metadata records created based on the combined method of Rich Snippets and Linked Data. 200 metadata records in two groups (100 records as the control group with the normal structure and, 100 records created based on microdata and implemented in RDF/XML as experimental group) extracted from the information gatewa...

The Semantics of Semantic Interoperability: A Two-Dimensional Approach for Investigating Issues of Semantic Interoperability in Digital Libraries

The networked information environment comprising digital libraries, digital collections, and digital repositories increase people’s expectations for information access. Specifically, users anticipate better search capabilities across these networked information resources and the metadata records associated with the resources. The opportunities also exist for improved information exchange or int...

Middleware for semantic-based security and safety management of open services

The trend towards ubiquitous public services is driving the deployment of large-scale, heterogeneous, distributed information services. In order to support automated information access and processing, this information is marked up using semantic metadata models represented using ontology languages such as OWL. The use of such a semantic metadata model is twofold: to enable content-based access ...

Query expansion based on relevance feedback and latent semantic analysis

Web search engines are one of the most popular tools on the Internet which are widely-used by expert and novice users. Constructing an adequate query which represents the best specification of users’ information need to the search engine is an important concern of web users. Query expansion is a way to reduce this concern and increase user satisfaction. In this paper, a new method of query expa...

Towards a Standard Ontology Metadata Model

Bio-ontologies are becoming increasingly important in semantic alignment for data integration, information exchange, and semantic interoperability. Due to the large number of emerging bio-ontologies, it is challenging for naïve ontology users to search, select, and adopt a “right” ontology for their applications. Therefore, it is important to have a consistent terminology metadata model and a r...
